Pretty alarming to see this guy working from a cherry picker today with a huge drill almost right on top of the tabernacle. It looked like he was drilling a hole for some wire to go through. He was all alone though, and there didn't seem to be any kind of forethought to protecting the tabernacle or sculpture in case of an accident.
He also was chipping away at the building to the left of where he was drilling. I am not sure what the work is related to -
So I think he may have been working on the sensor or measurement system on the tabernacle and the sculptures. I saw today that there are definitely new things on the sculpture like the ones on the Rape of The Sabine in the Loggia dei Lanzi and other out sculptures. I think they are sensors of some kind but they may be to keep the birds away - I am not really sure. I will try to post some close up photos. If anyone knows exactly what this is I am talking about please post a reply.
A friend has confirmed that he is almost positive these things are to keep birds off the statue. Sorry that I just can't seem to find out for sure!
